I visited Sitges in Spain for the first time this year. One trip later, I’m a convert.
The Catalan beach town is a 35 to 40-minute train ride from Barcelona and has been a favourite with gay travellers for decades.
Some might say that my timing could have been a wee bit better. I just missed Bears Sitges Week, which ran from September 4 to 13 and celebrated its 25th anniversary this year.
Turns out you don’t need a festival to have a great time. Here are my favourite things to do in Sitges.
Pull up a chair at ‘Judgment Square’
On the map it’s Plaça de la Indústria. To everyone who drinks there, it’s Judgment Square.
The nickname comes from the bar terraces that line it. The chairs all face the middle, so anyone walking through is effectively on a catwalk with a full audience.
It’s the heart of the town’s gay scene and where most nights begin, and the people-watching is hard to beat.
Parrots is the square’s best-known bar and has been pouring drinks for more than 30 years. Popping in each day became an almost daily tradition for me.
Work your way along the gay strip
From the square, the rest of the gay bars are only a few steps away along Carrer de Joan Tarrida.
Man Bar, La Villa and El Horno were all were a lot of fun.
Outside the strip
Monard Wines
A gorgeous wine bar, and my pick for a glass before the night gets going.
Alfresco
I went for a friend’s birthday dinner and it handled a big group with ease, though it would work just as well for an intimate dinner for two.
El Piano
The best piano bar in Europe, for my money. The cabaret is top notch, with artists from all around the world.
During my visit I was treated to performances by Australia’s own Trevor Ashley, Dame Shirley Bassey and even Liza Minnelli.

Gaby’s
The best burger in town. It’s delicious, and it’s right on the water.
TitoVitto
A tiny Italian restaurant on a quiet street in the centre of town, and the best Italian in Sitges. The real reason to go, though, is the decor. It’s one of a kind – look for the room of chandeliers.
Timo’s
The best restaurant in Sitges, hands down. Everything was delicious. Perfection.
Sofia by Picnic
I ate here alone and had the mussels and the chicken. It’s inexpensive fine dining with a spectacular ocean view.
El Super Pollo
I was sceptical at first. But this is the best rotisserie chicken I’ve had in my life: juicy, flavourful and cheap. The chips are heaven and the side salad is perfect.
